Boost your immune system while improving your gut health

So here’s a fun fact for you. Approximately 70-80% of your immune system resides in your gut. What that means is that the strength of your immune system depends on the health of your gut’s microbiome. Crazy right?! When we think of boosting our immune system (especially around the holidays and winter months) we don’t usually think of our microbiome.

The good news is that your diet can change the balance and health of your gut microbiota (aka your gut bugs) withing 24 hours. So it’s never too late to eat healthy and how amazing is it that food can be used as medicine to not only prevent the common cold or influenza but also disease!

Wondering what foods will give your immune system and your microbiome a boost?

Eating plant-based foods that are rich in fiber, phytonutrients and antioxidants will attract a stronger and more resilient microbiome which in turn will strengthen your immune system and make it more resilient to pathogens that may otherwise make you sick.

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts & seeds, legumes, and whole grains

Think colors of the rainbow. The more diverse your diet is the more diverse and resilient your gut bugs will be!

Add some fermented veggies & probiotic containing foods. THINK pickles, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, yogurt or kombucha.

Prioritize fiber by eating at least 35 grams daily. Your gut thrives on fiber! Some good sources are legumes, flax seeds, chia seeds and oatmeal.

Be Well!
